Illinois State University President Al Bowman is the only Illinois education leader to be named a member of the nation’s first Higher Education Cabinet, a creation of the The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The cabinet, comprised of presidents, trustees and leaders from 76 universities and related associations, will identify trends and direct discussions about the most pressing issues facing higher education today.
“It is an honor to be selected as part of this cabinet,” said Bowman, who will join leaders from institutions such as University of Notre Dame, Syracuse University and George Washington University. “This group, supported by the power and credibility of the New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education, will be an important, fresh voice for higher education across the country.”
Initially, the cabinet will convene face-to-face once each year and hold quarterly on-line meetings. "The New York Times is committed to fostering discussion about the changing landscape of higher education," said Felice Nudelman, executive director, education, The New York Times.
"The Chronicle of Higher Education and The New York Times are two must-reads for college leaders so it was a logical extension for us to bring this group together to discuss the most important issues facing higher education today," said Jeffrey Selingo, editor of The Chronicle. "The presidents in the cabinet represent all types of four-year colleges, public and private, small and large, from all parts of the country, and we are eager to hear their opinions."
