This month’s Student Volunteer Center (SVC) Service Splash will send 41 Illinois State University students to St. Louis on Saturday, Sept. 22, to help the Mathews-Dickey Boys & Girls Club. This is a new service project for the SVC.

Illinois State students will be split into two groups, one to help with the club’s youth football program that day and the other to work at the club’s main office with indoor cleaning and outdoor beautification.

According to Harriett Steinbach, Community Service Specialist in the Leadership and Service Unit of ISU’s Dean of Students Office, this opportunity will provide ISU students a chance to explore the issues affecting youth in at-risk and low income neighborhoods in an urban setting.

Each month the Student Volunteer Center plans a Service Splash, one-time volunteer opportunities that allow students to experience a variety of service projects without making a long-term commitment. Students pick and choose the Service Splash opportunities that interest them.  The experience helps students identify what issues are important to them and understand why it is important to volunteer in the community and become engaged citizens.
