Lincoln-Douglas Debate Reenactment, Sept. 27

U.S. Senate candidates Steven A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln will present their views on the future of the Union at a debate held on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. on the plaza in front of Illinois State University’s Milner Library.  The event is free and open to the public.

Veteran Lincoln and Douglas interpreters Timothy Connors and George Buss will re-enact a portion of the famous 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates during their presentation of  “A Discussion with President Lincoln and Judge Douglas.”

Connors and Buss are lifelong residents of Freeport, Illinois, and serve the students of Freeport High School. Connors is the director of speech and theatre and Buss is the district director of AVID.

“A Discussion with President Lincoln and Judge Douglas was written by Freeport native and 45 year veteran Stephen Douglas interpreter, the late Richard F. Sokup. Connors and Buss will participate in the Debate Reunion Tour ’08 when Illinois and the nation celebrate the Lincoln-Douglas Debates Sesquicentennial statewide in Springfield, Chicago, Bement and all seven original debate communities.
