The intrinsic and fascinating connections that exist between artists and writers is examined in “Poets on Painters,” a collaborative exhibition that opens Nov. 6 in the University Galleries at Illinois State University.
The show, organized by Wichita State University’s Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art, was co-curated by Katie Geha, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Texas at Austin, and Seattle-based poet Travis Nichols. They paired works by 20 contemporary painters with verse written by 20 contemporary poets, each writing a poem responding to an individual piece of art in the exhibition.
“Poets on Painters” will have its opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, and will run through Dec. 16. The reception will feature a multimedia performance by students and faculty in the College of Fine Arts and the Department of English.
At noon on opening day, Nov. 6, co-curator Katie Geha will speak about the exhibition, and at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, New York poet Kristin Prevallet will give a reading. Admission to the exhibition, reception, Geha lecture and Prevallet reading is free and open to the public.
