Police/Fire Training on Campus, Multi-Agency Drill May 29

Date: 5/27/08

Contact: Eric Jome

Beginning Tuesday, May 27 and continuing during the month of June, local police, fire and emergency management personnel will conduct training exercises in the decommissioned Walker and Dunn-Barton residence halls at Illinois State University.

For the most part, training exercises will be conducted inside the buildings and will have little or no impact on traffic flow in the area.  However, students, campus employees and visitors will notice a number of police, fire and other emergency personnel and vehicles in the area during the training exercises.  Police training exercises will involve the use of simulated ammunition.  The area around the buildings will be secured and signs will be posted alerting the public that training exercises are taking place.

A large-scale emergency response drill will take place in Walker Hall on the morning of Thursday, May 29.  The training exercise will involve police officers from Illinois State University, the Town of Normal, City of Bloomington, and the Illinois State Police, along with personnel from the Normal Fire Department, McLean County Emergency Management and Illinois State University.  The exercise will allow participating agencies to work together in a simulated emergency situation.

In the afternoon of Tuesday, June 3, the Normal Fire Department will use a smoke pot to fill several rooms on the second floor of Walker Hall with smoke, in preparation for a Wednesday, June 4 training exercise for arson investigation dogs.  Once the rooms have been filled with smoke, they will be ventilated and smoke will appear outside the building for a short time.

Police and fire training sessions will take place May 27-31, June 4, and June 23-30.
