Conference on Effects of Methamphetamine on Children, March 27

“Living in Danger: The Effects of Methamphetamine on Children” will be the subject of a half-day conference at Illinois State University on Thursday, March 27.  The conference, co-sponsored by the University’s School of Social Work, will feature speakers from law enforcement and social service agencies.

The conference will be held in the Bone Student Center Old Main Room and will begin at 8 a.m. with registration and a showing of “Crank: Darkness on the Edge of Town,” a PBS documentary on the effects of methamphetamine production and use on a small Tennessee community.  From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. conference speakers will address safety issues for social workers conducting in-home visits, the effects of methamphetamine on children and interventions with children and families impacted by the drug.

Speakers will include representatives from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, the Illinois Family Violence Coordinating Council and other social service agencies that work with drug treatment and domestic violence prevention. 

Advanced registration is required by Monday, March 24.  The conference is free for students, School of Social Work alumni and field instructors.  The cost for non-alumni and community members is $35.  For registration information call (309) 438-7320.
