Nurse and long-term care consultant Joanne Rader will speak about the face and fate of aging and the future of long-term care in a presentation on Thursday, April 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Old Main Room.  Rader’s presentation is free and open to the public.

Currently an independent consultant, Rader has worked in the field of long-term care nursing for 30 years. Throughout her career her work has focused on reducing the use of physical restraints, inappropriate psychoactive medications, and defensive, self-protective behaviors during bathing and morning care for persons with dementia.

She is the author of a 1996 AJN Book of the Year, Individualized Dementia Care: Creative, Compassionate Approaches. She has also published numerous articles and books addressing the emotional needs and behavioral symptoms of persons with dementia and co-authored and produced manuals and videos on individualized wheelchair seating for older adults. She is a founding member and board member of the Pioneer Network, an organization working to change the culture of aging in America.

While visiting Bloomington-Normal, Rader will tour Heritage Manor facilities, meet with community business leaders and interact with students and faculty in Illinois State’s Mennonite College of Nursing. The National Speaker Event is sponsored by Mennonite College of Nursing’s Expanding Teaching Nursing Home Project, the Xi Pi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International and Mennonite Alumni Organization.
