ISU Awards May Doctorates

Illinois State University awarded doctorates to the following individuals in May.

Daniel Alemu of Albany, N.Y., received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration.  The title of his dissertation is “Profiles of Postsecondary Institutions with High Faculty Turnover for Reasons Other than Retirement: A National Study of Four Year Institutions Using NSOPF:04.”  The son of Aregash Girma of Ethiopia and the late Solomon Alemu and husband of Selam Eyassu, Alemu received his bachelor’s degree in education from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia and his master’s degree in educational administration from Eastern Illinois University.  He is a member of the University Council for Educational Administration and the Midwestern Educational Research Association.

Tim Antonides of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, received his Ph.D. in English Studies.  His dissertation is titled “Grammatical, Cultural and Pragmatic Dimensions in Developing an English Program for Foreign Language Learners.”  The son of Joan and John Antonides of Penticton, British Columbia and husband of Monica, Antonides is a teacher at Surrey Christian School in Surrey.  He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Preeyaporn Chareonbutra of Normal received her Ph.D. in English Studies.  The title of her dissertation is “Comparison of the Gender Values: Western Tales and Thai Tales.”  The daughter of Buarin and Winitchai Chareonbutra of Thailand, Chareonbutra is a lecturer at Ubon Ratchathani University in Thailand.  She received her bachelor’s degree in English from Silpakorn University and her master’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte. 

Tallulah Crawley-Shinault of Normal received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration.  Her dissertation is titled “The Influence of Professional Development on the Work of Contemporary Urban Principals.”  Crawley-Shinault is director of the McLean County Urban League. 

Lynne Whitworth Ekdale of Bloomington received her Ph.D. in School Psychology.  The title of her dissertation is “A Case Study Analysis of a Home Visitation Program for Incoming High School Freshmen.”  The daughter of Willa Whitworth of Bloomington and the deceased John Whitworth and wife of Greg Ekdale, Ekdale is an assistant professor at Illinois State.  She received her bachelor’s degree in child development from Iowa State University and her master’s degree in school psychology from Illinois State.  Ekdale is a member of the National Association of School Psychologists and the Illinois School Psychologists Association.

Melody Green of Normal received her Ph.D. in English Studies.  Her dissertation is titled “The Sacrifice of Sacrifice: The Motif of Sacrificial Death in Children’s and Adolescent Fantasy.”  She is the daughter of Sharon and Denver Green of Waukesha, Wis.

Patrick Halloran of Coal City received his Ed.D. in Educational Administration.  The title of his dissertation is “An Exploratory Analysis of the Implementation of the Malcolm Baldridge Quality Framework of Selected Illinois School Districts: A Case Study of Two Lincoln Foundation Quality Award Winners.”  The son of the late Betty and late John Halloran of Dwight and the husband of Dawn, Halloran is a superintendent of Morris Community High School.  He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Eastern Illinois University and his master’s in educational administration from Illinois State.  Halloran is a member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators and the Association of School Business Officials as well as president of the Morris Kiwanis Club.

Anchalee Jansem of Normal received her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.  Her dissertation is titled “ESL Teacher Questions and Question Modifications.”  The daughter of Yupin and Sutip Jitsopa of Thailand and wife of Sinchai Jansem, Jansem is a lecturer at Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand.  She received her bachelor’s degree in English from Srinakharinwirot University and her master’s degree from the University of South Australia.

Mary Jones of Chicago received her Ed.D. in Special Education.  Her dissertation is titled “A Follow-up Study of Students with Disabilities Who Exited an Urban Public High School from 1997-2004.” The daughter of the late Virgie and late Henry Jones of Chicago and wife of Isaac Jones Jr., Jones is a teacher from the Chicago Board of Education.  She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Roosevelt University in Chicago and her master’s degree in English, special education and educational administration from Chicago State University. Jones is a member of Phi Delta Kappa and the Council for Exceptional Children.

Mudcharee Julotok of Normal received her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences.  Her dissertation is titled “Studies of Psychrotolerance Mechanisms of Listeria Monocytogenes 10403S.”  The sister of Sanit Chutintaranon of Ithaca, N.Y., Julotok is a researcher at Chulabhorn Research Institute in Bangkok, Thailand.  She received her bachelor’s degree from Chulalongkorn University and her master’s degree from Mahidol University, both in Bangkok. 

Amberyl Malkovich of Bloomington received her Ph.D. in English Studies.  The title of her dissertation is “The Imperfect Child: Romanticizing and Socializing the Victorian Child in the Works of Charles Dickens and His Children.”  The daughter of the late Ronald Malkovich and granddaughter of the late Betty and late Joseph Malkovich all of Duluth, Minn., Malkovich received her bachelor’s degree in English and psychology from the University of Wisconsin- Superior and her master’s degree in English literature from Minnesota State University-Mankato.  She is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, MLA, CHLA, Nineteenth-Century Studies Association and NCTE.

Devona Mallory of Rock Island received her Ph.D. in English Studies.  The title of her dissertation is “Magical Realism as a Tool of Empowerment in Selected Women’s Novels.”  The daughter of Gwendolyn Jamison of Rock Island and James Mallory, Jr. of Park Forest, Mallory received her bachelor’s degree in mass communication and her master’s degree in English from Illinois State.  She is a member of the Lambda Delta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta and a Diversifying Faculty in Illinois Program Fellow.

JoAnn Percel of Chicago received her Ed.D. in Educational Administration.  Her dissertation is titled “Authentic Roles and Responsibilities of Paraprofessionals Working with Students with Disabilities in Inclusive Settings.”  The wife of Stanley Percel, Percel is an assistant principal of the Courtenay Language Arts Center of the Chicago Public Schools.  She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and special education from Western Illinois University and her master’s degree in special education from Northeastern Illinois University.

Theresa Schlabach of Bettendorf, Iowa, received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration.  The title of her dissertation is “The College Experience of Students with Asperger’s Disorder: Perceptions of the Students Themselves and of College Disability Service Providers Who Work with These Students.”  The wife of Mary Schlabach, Schlabach is an assistant professor at St. Ambrose University.  She received her bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University and her master’s degree from the University of Iowa.

Marcea Seible of Normal received her Ph.D. in English Studies.  Her dissertation is titled “The Transition from Student to Professional: A Pedagogy of Professionalism for First-Year Composition.”  The daughter of Barbara Seible of Waterloo, Iowa, and the late David Seible, Seible received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Northern Iowa.  She is a member of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing, Council for Programs in Scientific and Technical Communication, National Council of Teachers of English, National Writing Project and Sigma Tau Delta.

Rena Shifflet of Bloomington received her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.  Her dissertation is titled “The Instructional Use of Blogs and Wikis for K-12 Students.”  The daughter of the late Rita and late Ivo Marchiorello and wife of Michael Shifflet, Shifflet is an assistant professor at Illinois State.  She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education from Illinois State.  Shifflet is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa, International Society for Technology in Education, Illinois Computing Educators, National Association for Education of Young Children and the Association for School Curriculum Development.

Eugene Simmons of Chicago received his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education.  His dissertation is titled “The Effects of Using QAR Reading Strategy to Improve Students’ Conceptual Understanding of Quadratic Functions as Presented in Their Textbooks.”  The son of Essie Simmons of Chicago and husband of Loretta Simmons, Simmons is a mathematics teacher in the Chicago Public Schools.  He received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from North Central College.  Simmons is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Sutthirat Sitthisak of Normal received her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences.  Her dissertation is titled “Molecular Characterization of Genes Involved in Copper Homeostasis of Staphylococcus Aureus.”  Sitthisak is a lecturer at Naresuan University in Thailand.

Judy Speers of Newcastle, Maine, received her Ed.D. in Educational Administration.  The title of her dissertation is “The Design and Utilization of Performance Assessments by Vocational Education.”  The daughter of Vivian and Elza Moses of Tiskilwa and wife of Gary Speers, Speers received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Illinois State.  She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Linda Wastyn of Davenport, Iowa, received her Ph.D. in Education Administration.  The title of her dissertation is “Why Alumni Don’t Give: A Qualitative Study of What Motivates Non-donors to Higher Education.”  The daughter of Fran and Jim Hippler of Greenville, S.C. and wife of Ron Wastyn, Wastyn is director of Grants and Information Resources at St. Ambrose University.  She received her bachelor’s degree in political communication from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., and her master’s degree in speech communication from the University of Georgia-Athens.  Wastyn is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, American Association of Grant Professionals and Association of Prospect Researchers for Advancement.
