The 8th Annual Students Involved with Technology (SIT) Conference for students in grades 3 through 12, will be held on Feb. 16 in the new Workforce Development Center located at the Heartland Community College’s Raab Road campus in Normal. SIT is a conference for students, by students, as students are both the teachers and the learners. The deadline for registering this year is Feb. 1. Directions for registration and more conference details can be found at the SIT website at www.sitconference.org
Last year, SIT had 320 students from all over Central Illinois who experienced a full day of workshops, keynote address, snack and lunch, special projects and contests, and a closing session with prize announcements and drawings.
Students at SIT can decide if they want to attend all the sessions as a participant, or if they would like to be a presenter at one or more sessions during the day. Presenters create a technology-related session (25 minute) along with handouts, and must also include a Q & A section at the end of their session. Student presentations range from robotics, gaming, web design, installing a CD drive, to animation and film editing. Other tech offerings are building mini-hovercraft, Internet safety for kids and parents, and much more.
The SIT Conference is organized through the Bloomington-Normal Educational Alliance Tech Committee, with members from District 87, Unit 5, Olympia Schools, Illinois State University's Extended University, Heartland Community College, Bloomington Public Library and State Farm Insurance Company.
Registration is $18 for students and scholarships for students in need are available. For a student perspective of the conference, you can download this interview of one of last year's presenters, Nick. http://www.exu.ilstu.edu/collegeandmain/videos/11-28-2007_nick_frichette.wmv
