Illinois State to Compete in RecycleMania

Date: 1/15/08

Contact: Eric Jome

Illinois State University’s recycling program has greatly expanded its operations in recent years and recycles more than 1,600 tons of material annually.  The University is hoping to increase that number as it takes part in this year’s national RecycleMania competition, Jan. 27 through April 15.

RecycleMania is a 10-week competition between colleges and universities across the country to see which campus can recycle the most. Competition categories include the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, and the highest recycling rate.  The winner in each category will receive a traveling trophy and a permanent award to recognize their accomplishments.

Illinois State participated for the first time in last year’s competition and finished in the top 50 percent of the 130 schools participating. Competition will be even greater this year with more than 250 schools - 11 of them from Illinois – participating in the event.
