Focus The Nation Global Warming Solutions Events, Jan. 28-31

Illinois State University is joining more than 1,300 colleges, universities and K-12 schools across the United States in Focus the Nation, a national discussion about “Global Warming Solutions for America.”  Focus the Nation events, including a global warming “teach-in” will be held on campus Jan. 28-31.

Illinois State faculty members will tailor class lectures and discussions to examine how climate change relates to their course topics.  Evening events for the campus and surrounding community will also focus on local, national and worldwide responses to global warming.

  • Monday, Jan. 28 – “Awakening From Our Trance: Reversing the Global Climate Crisis” will be presented by Normal resident Carolyn Treadway , one of 1000 people trained by Al Gore to give his slide show presentation, on which the Academy Award winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth is based.  Schroeder Hall Room 138 at 4:00 pm.

  • Tuesday, Jan. 29 – Two free public showings of The 11th Hour, a documentary narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio.  Normal Theater at 5:30 p.m. & 8:30 p.m.  The film describes the impact of human activities on the environment and discusses solutions to the problem of global warming. 

  • Wednesday, Jan. 30 – A public showing of the live, interactive webcast The 2% Solution.  The webcast features Stanford University climate scientist, Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins, green jobs pioneer Van Jones, actor Edward Norton, and youth climate leaders, in a discussion of global warming solutions.  7 pm in Moulton Hall Room 208.

  • Thursday, Jan. 31 – Mayor of Normal, Chris Koos, will discuss the Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement and environmental steps taken by the Town of Normal.  7 pm in Moulton Hall Room 208.

The Focus the Nation events at Illinois State are made possible by the University’s American Democracy Project and Green Team. As a way to further promote civic engagement, there will be voter registration opportunities on campus throughout the week of Jan. 28.
