A free master class at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 1, will precede a 5 p.m. Sunday, March 2, guest artist recital at Illinois State University by saxophonist Joseph Lulloff and percussionist Gwendolyn Thrasher, both Michigan State University faculty members.
Both are free and open to the public. The master class will take place in the Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall and Sunday’s recital will be in Kemp Recital Hall.
Lulloff is a sought-after performer and clinician who performs regularly with symphony orchestras throughout the United States. He also has been a frequent soloist in Europe, Southeast Asia and Japan. A former University of Illinois music faculty member, Lulloff is a distinguished professor of saxophone performance studies at Michigan State, from which he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Thrasher also is a Michigan State faculty member. She won the Keiko Abe Prize at the second World Marimba competition in Okaya, Japan, and the top prize at the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts’ ARTS competition. Thrasher was awarded the performer’s certificate from the Eastman School of Music and has also been the recipient of the Outstanding Young Musician award from the Peabody Conservatory and the Governor’s Scholarship award from the state of Michigan. She has maintained a career as an active solo, chamber, and orchestral musician.
