Student soloists will hold the spotlight at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, when the Illinois State University School of Music Gold Series presents the Concerto-Aria Competition winners performing in the Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall.
Admission is $6 for the general public, $5 for faculty-staff and $4 for students and senior citizens. Children 6 and younger are admitted free.
In addition to competition winners and an honorable mention performer, the concert will feature the Concert Choir and Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Karyl Carlson of the School of Music.
Soprano Kristin White will sing “Steal Me Sweet Thief” from Gian Carlo Menotti’s one-act opera, “The Old Maid and the Thief.” The other winner, senior Dorian Jackman will play “Concerto” for double bass by Eduard Tubin. The honorable mention recipient in the competition, tubist Humberto Rivera, will play Barnes’ “Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra.”
The Orchestra will perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Russian Easter Overture,” and the orchestra, choir and solo mezzo-soprano will perform music written by John Corigliano to Dylan Thomas’s “Fern Hill.” Kathryn Kerr, English, will present brief remarks about the poem.
