Steger to Deliver Hibbert Roberts Lecture

Illinois State University’s Hibbert R. Roberts Lecture in Public Policy will be delivered by Manfred Steger, professor of Global Studies and academic director of the Globalism Institute at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.  Steger will present “The Rise of the Global Imaginary: Modern Political Ideologies in Transformation” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, in the Old Main Room at Bone Student Center.  The lecture is free and open to the public.

Steger, a former faculty member at Illinois State, is also a senior research fellow at the Globalization Research Center and affiliate graduate faculty member at the University of Hawai’i-Manoa.  His academic interests include global studies, political history, nonviolence and international politics.

Steger has presented on globalization, ideology and nonviolence in the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Australia.  His study “Globalism: The New Market Ideology” won the Michael Harrington Award of the New Political Science Section of the American Political Science Association.  He has been a consultant on globalization for the U.S. State Department and an advisor on a U.S. Public Television series on the rise and fall of socialism. 

Hibbert R. Roberts was the chair of the Department of Political Science for 22 years and was an expert in international relations and American foreign policy.  The lecture series was established by his family and friends to honor Roberts, who was mentor, colleague, advocate and friend to faculty and students alike.
