Talarico to Deliver First Hoon Mok Chung Lecture Oct. 5

Gary Talarico will deliver the inaugural Hoon Mok Chung Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bone Student Center Old Main Room at Illinois State University. His lecture, "The Evolution of the Japanese Economy: From Arrogance to Despair in a Decade," is free and open to the public.

Talarico, a former student of Chung's at Illinois State University, will reflect on how Chung's influence guided Talarico's academic and career choices and led to his interest in the economy of Japan. Talarico will examine changes in Japan's economy from the 1980s through the present and will conclude by honoring the legacy of Chung.

Talarico earned a master's degree in political science and a bachelor's degree in sociology at Illinois State. He holds a master's degree in international affairs with concentrations in international economics, Asian studies and foreign policy from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Talarico is a managing director of Sun Capital Partners and is responsible for the New York office of the firm as well as for Japan.

Hoon Mok Chung was a professor at Illinois State University from 1971 to 1979. During his career, he served as the president of the Import-Export Bank of Korea, special advisor to two Presidents of the Republic of Korea, executive director of the Asian Development Bank, chairman of Hyundai Engineering and Construction and director of the World Bank.
