Hagstrom has been with the CSO for 10 years, first winning the fourth chair trumpet position and becoming second trumpet a year later. Prior to that, he was principal trumpet of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and was an assistant professor at Wichita State University.
A native Chicagoan who grew up listening to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Hagstrom is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and master of music degree graduate of Wichita State University. Between his bachelor's and master's degrees, he performed in "The President's Own" United States Marine Band and was principal trumpet for three years. Recent recordings featured Hagstrom with the Chicago Brass Choir, and he can be heard as lead trumpet on Daniel Barenboim's recording on the Teldec label titled "Tribute to Ellington."
