On their way to lighting the exterior of the new College of Business Building, Illinois State University administrators found a lighting solution for the quad.

This summer, Illinois State has initiated a two-year project that will upgrade all the outside pole lighting on the quad, replacing about 60 concrete poles and light fixtures with new, energy efficient lights atop new sleek black poles. Although the current lights were installed about a decade ago, many of the concrete poles, which are much older, have deteriorated due to water seepage and year after year of temperature change.

"When the outside lighting was installed around the College of Business Building, everyone really liked how they worked and how they looked," said Charles Scott, executive director of Facilities Management. "So instead of replacing the old quad light poles a few at a time, I initiated a two-year, two-phase project to replace about 30 lights on the south end of the quad this year and the remaining 30 light poles during the next fiscal year."

Although the light output of the new bulbs will be about the same, the new globes will allow greater illumination, resulting in increased visibility at night along with energy savings.
