Cartoon-like Sculpture Featured in Gallery Exhibition

An exhibition of unique sculpture by young New York City artist Johnston Foster, titled "Seasons in the Abyss," opens tonight, Jan. 18, and will continue at the University Galleries at Illinois State University through March 9. Admission is free and open to the public.

Foster's unique visual language is a derivative of his life-long exposure to pop culture, mainly through television. His cartoon-like sculptures reflect the imagery and iconography of television and use that familiar language to promote further inquiry into the meanings of his work.

A native of Virginia, Foster holds a BFA degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and earned his MFA degree from Hunter College after attending Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has had three solo exhibitions of his work, in New York City and Richmond, Va.

Also open in the galleries is a wood show, "With the Grain," curated by faculty member Leah Woods in Gallery 2, and a show in Gallery 2.5 by Chicago artist Carrie Gundersdorf.

University Galleries are open 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays through Mondays.
