Photographer Andrea Modica, an associate professor of media studies at Drexel University in Philadelphia, will be the Visiting Artists Program guest lecturer at noon Wednesday, Feb. 21, in room 149 in the Center for the Visual Arts at Illinois State University.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Modica has received numerous grants including a 1994 Guggenheim Arts Fellowship and a 1990 Fulbright-Hays Research Grant, among many others. Her work has been published in numerous magazines including Harper's, Mother Jones and The New York Times Magazine. She has published five monographs: “Treadwell,” “Minor League,” “Human Being,” “Barbara” and “Real Indians.”

In her current project, she is photographing a family-run slaughterhouse in Colorado. Transforming reality into fantasy, Modica creates narratives that seem to have no beginning or end, yet present endless scenarios. Her photographs are made with an 8X10 camera and hand printed in platinum.

Modica’s work is included in numerous collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, George Eastman House in Rochester, The National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C. and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
