The Illinois State University School of Communication is the
inaugural recipient of the 2007 FOCUS (Faculty Opportunities for Creating
Civic and Community Understanding Among Students) Department/School Award,
which recognizes commitment to excellence in incorporating civic/community
engagement into the curriculum and co-curricular activities. The School will
receive $2,500 to enhance or sustain the School’s civic/community efforts.
The Department of Physics received an Honorable Mention and will receive $1,000 in recognition of its activities.
“The School of Communication’s academic programs, co-curricular projects and research activities are aimed at producing citizens who can effectively engage in civic and community initiative for the betterment of all,” said Larry Long, executive director of the School of Communication. “Effective engagement happens through the communication process and leads to positive relationships with others.”
FOCUS, funded through an enhancement funds request, compliments the First Year Experience and General Education. It also supplements efforts to incorporate civic and community engagement in individual degree programs. More information may be found at www.focus.ilstu.edu.
