In addition to a scheduled daytime event, Illinois State University
students will also hold a candlelight vigil on Monday, April 23, at 9 p.m.
in honor of students and faculty members killed in the shootings at Virginia
Tech. The vigil is open to all and will be held on the north end of Illinois
State’s Quad. Those attending are urged to bring their own candles for the
event.
Sociology graduate student Mat Willey is spearheading organization for the
evening event. “I’ve had dozens of emails from students asking how they can
help,” said Willey, who is also a Fellow in Illinois State’s Stevenson
Center for Applied Community and Economic Development. “We feel it is
important to continue this show of unity with students at Virginia Tech.”
Illinois State student leaders have organized a daytime vigil at 4:30 p.m.
that afternoon on the Quad. The Student Government Association, Association
of Residence Halls, University Program Board and Division of Student Affairs
planned the event to help the Illinois State campus community demonstrate
its sympathy for Virginia Tech.
