President Bowman Releases Statement about Incident at Northern Illinois University

The tragedy at Northern Illinois University Thursday afternoon has left members of the NIU family dead and injured, and many, many others in need of counseling and care.  I know I speak for our entire campus community when I say that the students, faculty, staff and friends of NIU are uppermost in our thoughts.

Illinois State University has already offered its counseling assistance to NIU, and we will continue to reach out to their campus with any assistance they may need.  I also know that our student leaders are already planning an event in support of NIU to be held early next week.

We of course remain very concerned about our Illinois State University family.  We learned of the shootings just moments after the incident happened, and I immediately sent an e-mail message to all students, faculty and staff and placed the same message on this homepage.  The earlier message expressed our concerns for the people of NIU and reminded our campus community of the common sense safety principles that help keep us safe.

Meanwhile, our counselors remain fully prepared to help students, particularly those who may have friends attending NIU. Our police department data tells us we live in a safe University environment—but we continue our work to keep our campus as safe as possible.  As always, we welcome your input in that effort.
