Blair Shares Residence Hall Safety Measures

“University Housing Services staff is committed to working with residence hall students to promote fire safety using a multifaceted approach.  Each residence hall is equipped with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and a fire alarm system.  Sprinkler systems have been installed in Wilkins, Wright and Haynie halls and are included in future renovation plans.  There are also sprinklers in all residence hall trash chutes, and evacuation plans are posted on each student room door and in common areas.

“Residence hall staff receives training during the summer to prepare them to respond to a fire alarm.  Their role is to help educate students on how to evacuate and assist in the evacuation at the main level of the building in the event of an alarm.  During the early part of the fall semester, announced fire drills are held to provide students with the opportunity to practice evacuating the buildings.  An unannounced drill is also held.  For the safety of all residents, those items that have been linked to a fire risk are not permitted in the residence halls.  In addition to prohibiting smoking, students are not permitted to possess halogen lights, candles, fireworks or cooking equipment.

“As with all aspects of safety, our greatest ally is our students, and we ask for their participation in behavior that promotes a safe environment for themselves and others in their community.”
